"My 25-year Coughing Misery" her own story by Shirley Brown, Whitwell, as feastured in the national press Sept '09

For 25 years I suffered with a cough which made my life a complete misery. It would start as soon as I woke up in the morning, and I'd have coughing fits throughout the day, which would really get me down.

I had hospital tests, saw countless experts and tried every remedy you could possibly imagine but nothing made a difference. I was prescribed inhalers and even antidepressants. Once, I was sent to the hospital and had tubes put into my stomach, as the doctor thought I had acid reflux.
People would tell me, "That's a nasty cough" and ask if I wanted a drink of water, but I knew it would do no good. Frankly, it was very embarrassing. I used to love to go to the cinema or to art galleries but stopped as I'd be so scared of having coughing fits in quiet places.
But now my cough has gone after I saw nutritionist Wendy Ayers who said my diet was the real cause of the problem. As much as anything, it was to ask about the reflux, but she suggested that food intolerances may be to blame and I agreed to a test. Before the results were back, I'd started making the suggested changes to my diet, and there was already an improvement.
The analysis from Yorktest showed that I had intolerances to cow's milk, eggs , wheat, kidney beans and yeast.
I loved omelettes, and used to get through loads of those with plenty of milk to drink. They went, and the results were dramatic!
In as little as a week, I began to feel different and things just got better and better, with the cough virtually vanishing. The very worst I get now is a slight tickle on occasions. It's hard to explain what its like having the coughing suddenly stop after 25 long years.
I'm starting to get my confidence back to return to the cinema and art galleries, and apart from anything else, I have so much energy. The diet changes, as advised by Wendy Ayers, have taken a bit of getting used to, but I'd do anything to keep that cough away

"I Want my Life Back". T.H. aged 38 years Sheffield
This is an interesting and challenging study that was featured as a Xmas story in 'Sheffield Star' - 20 12 08. ( see below ) It highlights how a wide range of health problems can have a common link, that is, food.Once the offending foods are identified and removed, the body can start to heal.

There are 3 main reasons that I have chosen her:
a, She has a very healthy diet and lifestyle but despite this has many long term health concerns- so it indicates that ' her healthy diet' may not be so healthy for her.
b,We had eliminated the usual food culprits such as wheat and dairy with no difference in symptoms
c, The client has had thorough investigation by the NHS which was inconclusive. They said it was definitely NOT linked to food.
d, The case indicates to me that you are NOT what you eat, but you are what you digest and absorb

Below is the story in her own words which she wants to tell.
"I have not felt well for many, many years and have suspected food problems for the past 10 years or so and have tried to eat a healthy diet within this time. I have felt really unwell for the past 18 months but the last few months have been the worst.

Symptoms - constant urinary tract infections, severe menstrual/ hormonal problems ( physically and emotionally), constant cold sores, chronic fatigue, muscle& joint pain, depression, poor concentration & memory, brain fog, ear & eye problems and many other personal symptoms.

My condition affected life considerably. I had no energy for work / socially and found myself missing out on many things. All my energy was taken up with just getting up and going to work, I had nothing left after this. No vitality/ zest for life.I would sometimes cry to my partner and told him I felt like I had been taken over by aliens... he used to say he did not know where I had gone and that he wanted the old me back.
I have found that I have been ill around Xmas and have spent many a year curled up on the sofa feeling sick
The doctor sent me to the Tropical Medicines and Infectious Diseases Clinic, where they did millions of blood tests which all came back negative.
I told them about my symptoms and was considering food intolerances. The Dr categorically denied that ANY of my symptoms and the way I was feeling could have anything whatsoever to do with food. He just offered me antibiotics for cold sores.
I have visited various other hospital departments for my ongoing problems where I was offered various types of invasive medication, strong pain killers, pills to stop blood clotting and for my severe breast problems- which cause side effects similar to the symptoms I was experiencing.
I have tried various remedies and dietary changes and although I have felt relief for a short time my symptoms have always come back.
I sought professional nutritional help from Wendy Ayers, because I was at the end of my tether and I felt I had been let down so many times by the medical profession. I felt so sure that ALL my problems were connected and from the same boiling pot, but nobody apart from Wendy would recognise this. Sometimes I felt like I was going mad."

28 10 08 Food intolerance test indicated that T.H. has intolerances related to cow's milk, pork, duck, turkey, lamb, salmon, tuna, coconut and yeast.
7 11 08 T.H. came for a follow up consultation to discuss the outcome of the test. She was advised which foods to eliminate from her diet, whilst at the same time having a nutritionally balanced diet.A programme of supplements to aid healing of the gut and aid food digestion was commenced.
14 11 08 Saw T.H. today who reports feeling irritable since excluding the 'forbidden foods'. I explained that her body is going through a detoxification stage,it is early days yet, and to feel like this is normal. She commented that she is feeling a little more alert and I noted that she did look more vibrant.
17 11 08 T.H. was away this weekend, how did she manage? "Its great how helpful restaurants can be when you explain things to them, only drank champagne and had a few vodkas and fresh orange so am doing well.I haven't had any hormonal symptoms yet this month and that should be happening right now...oh and my stomach feels really flat with no bloating!I have only been on the diet 16 days now so could all this really be happening so soon?"
24 11 08 Its over 3 weeks into the new regime and only a few days before her next menstrual period is due. T.H.is only getting mild breast tenderness, not the severe symptoms experienced prior to excluding the 'forbidden foods'. This is excellent news!
29 11 08 The 'alien' foods have been eliminated, the body is healing. No horrible 'monthly' misery, increased energy. Its working! There is sunshine at the end of the long tunnel. I am so proud of you, TH!

Sheffield Star newspaper feature "Going cold turkey's off the menu for Treana"
Published Date: 20 December 2008 By Nick Ward
TURKEY, tinsel and feeling terrible.
Christmas has always been considered the season to be jolly...well for most people.
But for Sheffield woman Treana Hudson it's been anything but.
In Christmases past, the 38-year-old complementary therapist from Woodhouse had been left as bad as a bag of turkey giblets and she didn't have a clue why.
Then she stumbled on the truth - and it was right there on her Christmas dinner plate.
Treana has an intolerance to the big bird - and every mouthful she gobbled was making her feel worse.
She said: "Christmases were always an ordeal and my parents used to refer to the festive season as the time when Treana was ill.
"My illness was a permanent fixture as much as Christmas and it would make the festive time not something I looked forward to.
"I never had any energy, would have joint pain and be often dizzy so I knew something wasn't right. My GP thought I had ME but then I paid a visit to a nutritionist and she told me straight away it could be all down to something I was eating."
Treana consulted nutritionist Wendy Ayers who conducted a food intolerance test, which identified she was having a problem with turkey and most dairy products.
"I was always a joke at Christmas at it's worst I thought my body was taken over by aliens," said Treana.
"But now I'll be having a great time so long as I stay clear from turkey." Wendy said: "Treana came to me and I recognised the symptoms straight away and got her tested for food intolerances.
"I can usually tell if food is the problem and after cutting out the foods which came up on the test, she was able to make a full recovery.
"Treana now has her old zest for life back thanks to cutting out the turkey."

Case Study D E aged 40 years Hackenthorpe, Sheffield
Presenting health concerns: IBS ? cause Tired bloating flatulence diarrhoea most mornings
D E came to me in January 07 after suffering the seemingly widespread syndrome - IBS for the previous year. He was taking no medication / health supplements and was having no treatment at all.
He had a very hectic work schedule, working several nights till the early hours as well as in the daytime. His symptoms were greatly concerning his wife, were affecting his social life and resulted in him frequently arriving at work late.
I carried out the YORKTEST 113 Food Intolerance test which confirmed that D E had an intolerance to yeast. It has been successfully treated by-
a. Removing the cause, i.e. excluding all food containing yeast from the diet
b. Improving not only overall health with nutritional supplementation, but also taking specific supplements to improve gut function and aid healing of the lining
c. Eating a healthy wholefood diet without junk food, alcohol, caffeine, additives or preservatives
After starting the treatment, initially his symptoms appeared to be worse which is due to die-off of the yeast in the gut. He persevered with the treatment and his yeast-free diet. After a couple of months he was feeling great, looking healthy with lots of energy, had lost over 2 stones in weight without counting calories, and was rid of all the distressing symptoms which had interfered with his whole life.
It is interesting that D E did not associate his symptoms with the food and drink that he was consuming regularly, or realise that a food intolerance can lead to weight gain. He has found it easier than he initially thought to comply with my dietary advice. If he has the odd lapse in his eating habits nowadays, for which he may suffer next morning, he can very easily pinpoint the offending food .
In my practice I frequently see people who are desperate to lose weight, and cannot do so, in spite of following a strict calorie controlled diet and healthy diet plan. This is because when we eat a food regularly to which our immune systems have an intolerance, the body tries to cope with this situation by holding on to fluid. This dilutes the offending food , and the excess fluid leads to weight gain.
What I say to clients is ' Your healthy diet may not be healthy for YOU, find the offending food and the weight will disappear!' How many more people would not only lose weight but improve their overall health and well being, if they realised that a simple blood test may be the answer to their problem.

"How pickled onions made me late for work"
D. E.featured in "Sheffield Star" Published Date: 26 November 2008
By Sarah Dunn
KEYS, wallet, mobile phone ... and how many toilets are there on the way? For Sheffield trade counter worker Darren Eyre, this was the usual list of things he had to go through before leaving the house for his journey to the office.
Because his commute could take up to 40 minutes he had to carefully consider his route so there would be toilets to stop at if the call of nature came.
He said: "I would set off for work and never make it there on time because of an urgent need.
"Not so much a call of nature, more a loud scream. How do you tell the boss I'm late again for work because I had to go to the loo?"
Now Darren and his boss are happy again after problem foods in his diet - including pickled onions - were diagnosed as being the cause of his Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which caused him to run to the loo every five minutes.
His wife Sally visited Hackenthorpe nutritionist Wendy Ayers to get advice about the problem, who suggested a food intolerance test called FoodScan 113.
The test is the next step on from an initial blood test, which uncovers if there is evidence of a food intolerance and is able to pinpoint foods responsible and the severity of effects.
The results show that gravy, beer, pickled onions and even bread are the Devil's food - for Darren at least.
The thing they all have in common is yeast, and although Darren, of Weakland Drive, Hackenthorpe, now has to avoid some of his favourite foods, he has lost two stone in weight and his toilet problems have disappeared.
He said: "Now I feel great. It is a change to my lifestyle but I'd recommend a food intolerance test to anyone who might have similar problems."
Wendy added: "Your body is made up of what you eat and most people are not aware of how much difference a simple food intolerance test can make to you life."

D G aged 7 years Worksop, Hyperactivity, learning problems, frequent sore throat, coughs and colds.
Darren had trouble sitting still, listening and was easily distracted. His concentration at school was poor and he argued a lot with his older sisters.Due to recurrent coughs and colds he had lot of time off school. His appetite was also poor and he was described by his mum as a 'faddy' eater.
He was found to have a number of food intolerances and I explained how to lessen his exposure to these foods. "His behaviour is so much better, he is more confident, calmer, eating well and enjoying trying new foods," says his mum."Darren is enjoying school now and is better behaved at home.An added bonus is that everyone at home is taking a greater interest in healthy eating. My visit to see Wendy has been worthwhile, as she has illustrated the influence of nutrition on both behaviour and learning.I hope that many more children will benefit from this approach to well-being."

N G, aged 61, Mosborough. Digestive problems, arthritis
I have suffered from chronic pain and digestive upset for years and tried the alternative route after being told "Learn to live with it".I can now manage my pain better and enjoy a wider variety of foods without suffering the next day. That was due entirely to Wendy who treated me holistically with vitamins, herbs and relaxing therapies.Always professional and caring, she offers a calm, unhurried approach, discussing symptoms, diet and progress at length.I recommend fellow sufferers to go down this route. My first session was a new beginning for me.Thanks Wendy seem two small words in return"

C W, aged 36, Waterthorpe. Depression, anxiety, PMT, obesity, tired all the time.
C W had a miscarriage followed by a successful pregnancy in 1999. She started to feel very low and tired as the pregnancy progressed but was told it was quite normal. After the birth, Caroline’s mood got worse and she was now suffering from clinical depression , anxiety , PMT, over eating and had began to feel suicidal. She came to me in 2005 after suffering for over 5 years, as she knew anti-depressants were not the answer. Within 3 months of changing her diet and taking nutritional supplements, she no longer had PMT, her mood had lifted and after 6 months the suicidal thoughts and anxiety had gone totally. Caroline says ‘I have never felt better. The only regret is that I didn’t find Wendy before and that I have missed out on my daughter’s development due to being depressed. You cannot put a price on feeling well .What is 6 months treatment in 6 years of depression? . The Sun shines in my life ever day.

W C aged 30 Woodhouse. Multiple sclerosis, allergies
'I use eco-friendly natural products but they were difficult to get hold of, that is, until I found out that Wendy stocks natural toiletries and everyday household products. When I visit for Reflexology and dietary advice,I can also stock up on vitamins, organic shampoo, deodorant and even my favourite herbal teas, cereals and flax seeds! There is nowhere locally which can offer such a range of treatments, sevices and products. What a good service and on my doorstep! Wendy is also very knowledgable, friendly and approachable.'

B aged 31 Hathersage. Acne Weak immune system Infections
Who do you turn to when your GP says you have to live with your condition and you feel that you have tried everything available with little result?
B had suffered from acne since her early teens. After countless hospital visits, many different lotions and yet more antibiotics to treat her skin, she was feeling low, that is, until by chance bumping into an old school friend who had found relief from the same skin ailment.
B says ' My friend suggested that I try a totally different approach by visiting her nutritionist in Hackenthorpe, so in desperation I consulted Wendy Ayers at 'Complementary Health'. I was offered a lot of positive advice on how to achieve a healthier lifestyle and a more balanced eating regime. Wendy suggested the most effective natural remedies to strengthen my immune system and aid detoxification, along with using chemical free toiletries on my skin. At first I was sceptical but was willing to give it a go.I can't believe it. The irritating acne has disappeared. It's such a relief to be normal after all these years of suffering. An added bonus is that I feel so much more confident and in control and have not had one single bout of infection in the past year!

T T, aged 29, Killamash. Stress and Relaxation
T T - "As a new client, I was somewhat apprehensive about having a massage but I felt able to relax immediately. Wendy showed me how to relax more at home too, by means of correct breathing techniques, guided imagery and visualisation.Life's tensions and demands simply melted away. I went home feeling relaxed and completely renewed."I now practice these simple new techniques whenever life gets to me"

J S,aged 33, Worksop. IBS, Bloating, Constipation.
J S had been suffering with severe IBS for 7 years prior to approaching me. After numerous hospital tests she was told there was no cure and was shocked and angry by their unsympathetic response. She says "I went along to see Wendy at the suggestion of a friend who had been successfully treated. I felt sceptical as I couldn’t imagine that diet would be the solution to my problem which was affecting both my work and social life. Wendy performed the YORKTEST food test. After receiving the result, I introduced new foods and excluded certain foods from my diet and kept a record of my symptoms. At the same time I took health supplements which helped support my digestion. To my utter amazement my symptoms calmed down. I have traded the foods that upset me for my health. An added bonus is that my skin is looking healthier and I have lost a stone in weight!Thank you so much for your support. I cannot say in words how you have changed my life- you are my lifeline right now"

NJ,aged 19, Lodge Moor. Digestive problems Tired all the time
"I have suffered from digestive problems all my life. I am a full time student and felt so shattered when I came home from university that I did not want to socialise in the evening. Exhaustion ruled my life. I was strongly recommended by a friend to contact Wendy, as her health had improved as a result of changing her diet slightly. I had the YORKTEST and within three weeks my health was transformed. My energy has returned and I now feel alive when I wake in the mornings!I have taken up football again"

N B, aged 49 Walkley. Menopause
N B read about me in a newspaper and contacted me as she was looking for an alternative to HRT. She was suffering from apathy, lack of energy, hot flushes, insomnia, bloating, constipation and general aches and pains. At the initial consultation she was given recommendations with regard to her diet, lifestyle and nutritional supplements, along with advice on simple relaxation techniques to reduce family and work related stress . One month later when I saw her she said "I generally have more energy and feel more positive. My symptoms are reducing." Four months down the line she is getting on very well- "I feel better mentally, more relaxed and in control. I am sleeping better, my flushes are very infrequent and constipation is a thing of the past. People have noticed a more rational person in their midst. You have been a great incentive, Wendy, and have helped me through a very difficult time.

C W, aged 41, Doncaster. Poor memory, thyroid and weight problems
I met C W 8 years ago. He complained of constant tiredness, depression, recent weight gain, declining memory and concentration, and felt generally unwell. When I tested his Homocysteine level it was high ( 22 ). I recommended he make some dietary changes, as well as taking some Homocysteine- lowering supplements. When we met again recently, C W was full of energy with a sharp memory. He was able to exercise every day, had lost a stone in weight, and he not surprisingly, felt like a new man! His Homocysteine has now dropped to a much healthier level of 6. "I am sincerely grateful to Wendy"

D S, aged 28, Handsworth. Skin rashes, poor hair condition transformed with 100% natural products
"I started using chemical-free, organic products in 2002, after Wendy recommended them. I previously had dry, thick, unruly hair and spent a small fortune on numerous products. Since using 'Green People' shampoos and conditioners my hair is shiny and full of life. That 'straw- like' look has now gone and I now get many positive comments from friends. My son and daughter who have health problems triggered by environmental allergens used to suffer from itchy skin rashes and my GP said it was an allergic reaction but offered no real solution.I now realise why - ALL the lotions available on the NHS and most over-the-counter products, to treat my condition, contain harmful petro-chemicals, that can exacerbate my skin condition. Wendy introduced the family to 'Green People' cleansers, shower gels and moisturisers and we no longer experience any nasty itchy rashes. It's nice to know that I no longer flood my family's system with a harmful chemical cocktail! An added bonus is that the products last 3x longer than my usual toiletries."
