Lowering Homocysteine Levels is MY HEALTH INSURANCE for Future Good Health. My research and interest in this important subject initially stemmed from a personal desire to PREVENT hereditary disease that has sadly occured in my immediate family, such as Alzheimer's disease, hypertension, stroke, arthritis and diabetes, affecting both present and future generations Lowering Homocysteine plays a vital role in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and thyroid disease, cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, MS, diabetes, epilepsy, infertility, miscarriage, birth defects, asthma, osteoporosis and many other chronic health problems. Are you aware that HOMOCYSTEINE - may be the real cause of heart disease and over 100 serious medical conditions. Ever since researchers began to see cholesterol as a cause of heart disease they have found many inconsistencies.E.G. eighty per cent of heart attacks occur in people with LOW cholesterol( if you want to learn more about Cholesterol and Heart Disease and what you can do to prevent it, I recommend the book, 'Put Your Heart in Your Mouth' by Dr N Campbell-McBride ) Research at Harvard university has shown that fifty five per cent of heart attacks and strokes are the result of raised homocysteine levels. Homocysteine, made in the body from protein metabolism, serves a necessary function in the body after which it is usually broken down into harmless substances. If it is left intact, it attacks blood vessels, laying the foundation for many diseases and increased inflammation in the body. A correlation exists between high homocysteine levels and low levels of B vitamins which appears to be the missing link for many unexplained heart attacks. What if my Homocysteine Level is High? There aren’t any drugs to treat high homocysteine levels but it can be reduced in a short time by taking a special balanced multi-nutrient formula which quickly breaks down homocysteine. The risk of elevated homocysteine is not only limited to coronary heart disease.Doctors have long known that raised levels in pregnant women may result in birth defects and miscarriage. It is also linked to cancer and many other common health problems. Are you at risk? High risk groups include people who have a poor diet lacking in the correct amount of nutrients, are overweight, take little regular exercise, smokers, diabetic sufferers, and those who frequently drink too much alcohol and coffee . Even those with active healthy lifestyles may still be at risk if there is a family history of certain diseases and high homocysteine. Levels increase with age, oestrogen imbalances, stress and some medicines (see below) Strict vegans and vegetarians are also at risk from raised Homocysteine. Avoid Certain Medicines Some medicines have been tested and found to raise Homocysteine. These are: Methotrexate Fibric acid derivatives - used in diabetes Metformin - used in diabetes and other conditions Theophylline - used in asthma Corticosteroids - used in inflammatory diseases e.g. arthritis, asthma, ulcerative colitis. Sulphasalazine - used in arthritis Phenytoin, Phenobarbitone and Primidone - used in epilepsy Cyclosporin L-Dopa - used in Parkinson's disease Cholestyramine used to lower cholesterol Protease inhibitors - used for HIV and AIDS How do I find out my Homocysteine level?
